8 Sep 2023 - Arrived at Sand Hills State Park Campground in Hutchinson KS

Unbelievable we only have one more stop until we get home.  Today we departed Oakley KS at 0942 hrs and made our way primarily east and south a bit to Sand Hills State Park Campground which is just a few miles north of Hutchinson KS.

Interesting drive over this morning.  The Canadian wildfire smoke carried by the jet stream coupled with the extremely dry conditions here made the air quality at an alarming level and the visibility not good.

Very hazy, smoky conditions

Farmers are busy getting the fields ready for winter wheat crop.

The scenery evolved the further east and south we traveled, and we obviously entered a strip of oil fields.  There were pump jacks scattered throughout the fields and they were actively pumping.  We saw quite a bit of corn including some that had pummeled with hail, sorghum fields and soy beans.

Oil pumpjacks working hard!

Many acres of sorghum in this area

We arrived at 1406 hrs after driving 4 hrs 24 minutes and 236 miles.  That included a couple stops and a GPS/Google Maps discrepancy that took us about 20 miles more than we needed to drive.  That's OK, we arrived in one piece.

Sand Hills State Park Campground is unlike most of the Iowa State Parks we have camped in that the sites are full hookup.  This park is shaped in a circle with sites all the way around.  There are sites that cater to horse owners, including our site.  So for a state park we have a full hookup pull though site with a horse pen!!
Our horse pen to the right.  Beautiful sites!

Nice pull through with shade

We will be here for five nights.  We have tickets for the Cosmosphere tomorrow and the STRATACA Salt Mine Tour on Sunday.  THEN.....  we arrived to discover the Kansas State Fair is right here, right now!!!  We may have to check that out!  We don't have any peeps to see here and we are missing our Wichita Air Guard buddies Russ Brotsky who relocated to Surprise AZ, and John Kimball who is currently RV'ing the northeast - New York and up to Maine.  We are hoping they are doing well and have safe travels!
