28 Aug 2023 - Arrived at WYO Campground Cheyenne WY

We departed the Rock Springs Green River KOA this morning at about 0900 hrs and headed eastbound and down on I-80 towards Cheyenne WY, our next destination.  Weather was great, skies were clear and traffic was light.  Some pictures:

We saw a lot of this

Then we started to see some of this

We saw a whole lot of this

The closer we got to Cheyenne we started to see some of this

,,,, and this

We passed a bust of Honest Abe at the Summit Rest Area on Interstate 80 east of Laramie

We also passed a vast field of wind turbines

At 1406 hrs and 283 miles later we rolled into the WYO Campground which is a few miles east of Cheyenne just north of I-80.

We were originally planning to stay at F.E. Warren Air Force Base FamCamp, but I got frustrated with them and made reservations at a local commercial campground.  Each military campground has different rules.  Some don't take reservations at all.  Those that do, the lead time varies anywhere from 30 days to a year in advance.  F.E. Warren is 30 days out, which is not much in the grand scheme of things.  Then their office has screwy hours, only open certain days.  I got tired of playing games with them and just booked a local campground.  Their reviews were not that great anyway.

We got set up here quickly and then in came the weather.  A cell moved in and let go a torrential downpour with high winds.  We quickly stowed the satellite dish (pushed the button LOL), took down the flagpole and ensured everything was stowed outside.

Swamp city!
While we ate supper, watched the Cubs get beat by the Brewers, and start planning our adventures in Cheyenne, the ponds in the park dissipated.  We pushed the pause button on the game and headed out with Liberty for an evening walk about.

Our campsite, devoid of grass for Liberty, but (see below)

Nice doggy walking area right across the street from our site!

The main office..

Some campground decorations

We thought about taking a dip in the pool, but, naaah, think I'll pass.

Yeah, this ain't yo mama's KOA, but it will do for (gulp) four nights!!  We are glad we are self-contained and have plenty to see in town.  In their defense, the staff is very friendly and very helpful.  When we checked-in we did not even have to leave our vehicle.  A nice young lady came right to our truck and directed us to our site.  She met us there and then changed what site we were assigned because it looked like a tree might conflict with one of our slideouts. She also made sure we had visibility to the Directv satellite.

Tomorrow we plan to visit the Cheyenne Depot Museum, the Cowgirls of the West Museum, the Military Memorial Museum and the Nelson Museum of the West, all downtown.

Wednesday we may visit the Messenger Museum, the eight foot boots which are located around the downtown area, Wyoming State Museum and possibly the Wyoming Historic Governors' Mansion State Historic Site.

Thursday, our final day here we will head to F.E. Warren Air Force Base and visit the ICBM Heritage Museum, the F.E, Warren Air Missile Park, drive through the FamCamp and stop at the BX and Commissary.  If time permits, we will also visit the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum and possibly the Wyoming National Guard Museum.

That is packing a lot into three days, but we want to make the most of our time here.  Unfortunately we won't have time to drive 30 miles north to visit the Quebec 01 Missile Alert Facility which is the only accessible Peacekeeper Missile Alert Facility left in the world.  Next time!

Friday we pull chocks and head to the Air Force Academy FamCamp, better known as Peregrine Pines.
