20 Apr 2023 - Last Day at Ft Sam + Dinner with Myers and Boyers

Doreen, Norma, Randy, Ed, Yvonne, Rob out for a late lunch!

Our last day at Fort Sam Houston Campground and it was a great one!  The whole stay was fantastic!  This morning we completed all our "last day" tasks including tank emptying and flushing, uploading fresh water and then stowing all of our hoses.  Doreen walked across the street to the laundry facility (which serves as our storm shelter - more on that later!!) and did a couple loads there, and then wrapped things up inside in preparation for departure.

I troubleshot an issue we had last night with the big ol' brown truck.  When we got back here last night the truck's vehicle alarm decided to go off.  Twice!  We checked our keys and nothing pressing on the panic button, so after waking half the campground I unlocked the truck and decided I would troubleshoot in the morning.  Maybe the battery was going bad in my key fob?  So a possible related problem, the remote start has not worked for a while.  Well, the remote start won't work if the doors are open, the tail gate is open, or the hood is open.  I had a dash message a while back about the hood being open, but it was not.  Maybe these are related?  So I tried the remote start again and nada.  I opened the hood and disconnected the plug into the hood switch and reconnected it several times. Bam!  All of a sudden the remote start works!  So it looks like I might need to replace the hood switch.  Can do!  Will work on this later on down the road.

In the early afternoon we rode with our neighbors here at Ft Sam Houston campground, Randy & Norma Myers to a local restaurant to have a late lunch/early dinner with them and Rob & Yvonne Boyer.  We met at Lupe Tortilla restaurant here in San Antonio.

The Lupe Tortilla restaurant

Cementville, right across the parking lot from the Lupe Tortilla restaurant, was the area where the company Alamo Cement, formerly San Antonio Portland Cement, operated and its workers lived. Now, the area is home to the Alamo Quarry Market, located on the city's North Side.

Randy and I guarding the door!

As explained before, Randy Myers is an Air Force retiree and an Alliance owner, and Norma Myers an Air Force spouse.  I mention this because the spouses serve right along side the members and seldom get credit.  They have to hold down the fort as the member deploys, goes to schools, professional military education academies, etc. Rob and Yvonne Boyer are also both Air Force retirees, but they are staying at a different campground.  Rob was the Command Chief at the Air Force Academy and pursued RV repair after retirement, hence the Alliance RV connection.  Yvonne, Rob's spouse but also an Air Force retiree,  is attending culinary school down here and we so enjoyed hearing her stories about the school!  Doreen and I both watch "Hell's Kitchen" so we have an interest in that.  The lunch was a lot of fun but we really had a blast talking with everyone and hearing their stories.

After "lunch" we headed back to the campground before the nasty weather arrived.  I drove to the base fuel station and refueled the truck before tomorrow's trip.  Then we returned to the campground and were wrapping things up when my battle buddy Frank Leota arrives and delivers a special package for us!  Frank has a ranch in Texas Hills Country north of San Antonio.  Nearby there is a distillery called Rebecca Creek.  During supper last night we started talking about bourbon and Frank said he would hook us up!  So tonight Frank arrives at the campground and presents us with a bottle of Rebecca Creek Bottled in Bond Texas Straight Bourbon Whiskey and a bottle of Rebecca Creek Spanish Oak Blended Whiskey.  These whiskeys are distilled in Texas Hill Country.

Our Rebecca Creek bourbons and my Ben Shot bourbon glass with my first sample!!

They say that "It is no secret that our whiskey is made from water straight from the Edwards Aquifer. We also are proud to produce small batch blended bourbon whiskey, 16-year old straight bourbon whiskey, double barrel bourbon Spanish Oak whiskey, and Bottled in Bond Texas straight bourbon whiskey".  I can attest to the fact that it is very smooth!  We will share this with our friends all along our journey!  Thank you so much, Frank Leota!  We formed a bond in Iraq when the crap was hitting the fan, during the surge in 2006.  We love you like a brother!

Tomorrow we will pull chocks about 0900 hrs after the San Antonio rush, and head south on I-410, I-37 and US 281, I-2 to Mercedes TX and the Llano Grande RV Park where my sister Karen lives.  We will camp in one of her properties there until next Wednesday when we will head up the coast to the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station TX

Thanks for checking in on us!
