This morning at 0857 hrs we pulled chocks at the Jamaica Beach RV Resort and caravanned with our Georgia Alliance friends Ralph Lowther and Lindy Fairel towards the Galveston Ferry that takes us to Port Bolivar. This ferry bypasses the crazy Houston traffic and brings us out at Winnie TX on I-10, east of Houston.
Here is our timeline:
- 0857 hrs - departed the RV park
- 0934 hrs - arrived at the ferry and in line for boarding
- 0950 hrs - were marshalled onto the ferry
- 1003 hrs -- the ferry started across the bay
- 1018 hrs - at the Port Bolivar dock
- 1021 hrs - we were on land and headed towards I-10
So as we arrived at the ferry we were greeted by the yardmaster who checked to make sure our propane tanks were shut off on our coach. We use propane to power our refrigerator when not plugged into shore power, including as we travel down the road. The ferry requires the propane be shut off therefore the refrigerator is shut off. That is not a problem in the short term as long as the refrigerator and freezer doors remain shut. The problem is I was unable to get inside the coach to shut the refrigerator off before shutting off the propane, so the refrigerator continued to burn the propane out of the line until none remained, then the refrigerator went into error mode (no gas). More about that later.
We puckered a bit as we were directed into the far left lane and the sign said 13ft 0in height restriction. Our coaches are 13' 4" tall, guaranteed!! We made sure the yardmaster knew this and she marshalled us anyway!
As you can see by the timeline, within 16 minutes we were onboard and 13 minutes later we were under way. Once under way we could exit our vehicles so Ralph and I headed to an upper deck for pictures.
Once we were arrived at Port Bolivar, we departed the ferry and headed down the highway. On the left we passed the Point Bolivar Lighthouse and noticed people at the top working on it. There was really no place for us to stop there and from what we understand it is closed right now.
We saw many beach properties with buildings up on stilts. Most of them were brilliantly colored.
We stopped down the road a bit and turned our propane back on, but I assumed it probably did not ignite properly since we could not shut the refrigerator off properly. We could not stay there, so we headed out and would recheck it later.
Before entering I-10 we turned into a truck stop and there was Ralph and Lindy I double checked the fridge, and it recovered just fine, no issues.
The trip eastbound on I-10 was uneventful except for a few bumps. WE did take a few pictures along the way.
We arrived at the Frog City RV Park at 1402 hrs after driving 5:05 and 211 miles, with one stop, and I was tired, but our coach had been subjected to salt water spray while at Galveston so I really wanted to get it washed off. Luckily the campground here allowed washing RV's for a small price which I gladly paid. The humidity was kicking my butt by this time so washing the coach and the truck was a chore!
After washing a shower was in order and then out to eat some local sea food. At the next exit are multiple restarants to choose from and we found a good one.
Tomorrow we plan to drive to Avery Island and tour Tabasco Factory!
