It was breezy this morning and about 55 degrees F, so we were glad we brought our jackets and sweatshirts. We shed our tennis shoes and wore sandals and water shoes as we walked the shoreline. Reported water temperature was also 55 degrees F.
As mentioned last night, we were hunting for Petoskey stones. These unique stones are actually a stone and a fossil. They can be found on various beaches here, primarily from Traverse City to Petoskey along Lake Michigan. I call these stones "elusive" because when they are dry, the stone resembles an ordinary limestone rock, but when they are wet, you can see the distinctive mottled pattern of the six-sided coral fossils! Hunting for these reminds me of hunting for morel mushrooms - few will tell you their favorite spots and when you are looking for them they are easily overlooked!
So we walked about a half mile up the beach looking for these stones. At first there were none, but then all of a sudden we found one, then another! When we finished up we had quite a few. Our feet were getting cold because to see the pattern on them that distinguishes them from just plain stones, they have to be wet. It was a lot of fun searching for them but spending most of the time hunched over, my back was screaming pretty good. Here is what they look like. A few of these are really pronounced:
We've had a great time here in Traverse City. If you ever get up this way you will enjoy Holiday Park Campground and everything in the area there is to see and do in the area. If you are towing an Alliance coach you will undoubtedly meet Steve and Kelley Cerny!
Tomorrow morning we pull chocks and head north, across the Mackinac Bridge and then northwest to Lake Superior and the Pictured Rocks RV Park near Munising MI.
